Vettel: Too soon to judge advantage

By Jonathan Noble Wednesday, March 24th 2010, 05:29 GMT

Sebastian VettelSebastian Vettel thinks it far too early to judge if any of the big teams hold an advantage at the moment - despite seeing his outfit and Ferrari lead the way in Bahrain.

The Red Bull driver took pole position for the season opener and was out front when a spark plug problem slowed him and allowed Fernando Alonso to lead home a Ferrari one-two.

And although Vettel thinks his outfit will be just as strong in Australia this weekend as they were in Bahrain, he reckons it might not just be Ferrari that is snapping at Red Bull's heels.

"If you look in Bahrain, they [Ferrari] looked extremely competitive," Vettel said in Melbourne on Wednesday. "For sure, quicker than anyone else, but also in winter testing, all the way through, they have been very, very strong.

"But it will also be circuit to circuit. Some circuits you like more, some circuits you like less - sometimes from a driver point of view, sometimes the car just behaves better on one type of circuit. So, it is difficult to really say this car or that car.

"There are four teams that are very strong, but the midfield is also very strong – like Force India. We have done one race in Bahrain. That is the only real experience we have, apart from testing, so we need to wait a bit more."

Vettel said that one of the most encouraging aspects of his situation was that the Bahrain performance showed how competitive the RB6 is.

"I think, as I said, the most important thing going out of Bahrain, even though we didn't win, was that we have a very fast car. So, Friday we were struggling, we were not up to speed, but on Saturday and Sunday we were in quite good shape. So, it should be strong here – let's see what we can do."

Vettel also thinks that a repeat of the spark plug problem that robbed him of a probable victory in Bahrain is unlikely.

"The failure on Sunday, it is seldom that happens – maybe it happens only every 10 years," he said. "It shouldn't happen again. It is quite rare that the spark plugs fail."

Alonso: Bored fans should switch off

Reuters - Thu, 25 Mar 10:24:00 2010

Twice world champion Fernando Alonso gave some advice for viewers turned off by the underwhelming spectacle of Formula One's season-opener in Bahrain: "Go watch something else!"

New rules, including a ban on refuelling, were designed to inject excitement into the championship and discourage drivers from playing safe. But the plans fell flat at Sakhir, resulting in a procession decided at qualifying.

The Spaniard, who enjoyed a dream debut with new team Ferrari to lead a one-two with Brazilian team mate Felipe Massa, said the regulations must be given a chance.

"I think we need to be calm, we need to wait some races to see if the new rules have some impact in the show," Alonso said.

"Last year, (in the) first seven races, Jenson (Button) won six or seven. It was boring? Maybe yes, maybe not, this is Formula One.

"Michael (Schumacher) won five championships consecutively, it was boring? Maybe yes, maybe no, this is Formula One.

"This is about technology, about how precise everything is in terms of driver, mechanics, engineering, everything," continued Alonso.

"So people that want extra show, maybe they should reconsider whether they want to watch Formula One."

While Bahrain was a procession, Alonso said it was "not a bad race" and rather a showcase of individual battles.

"It was a fight between (Sebastian) Vettel and the two Ferraris, behind was a fight between (Nico) Rosberg and (Lewis) Hamilton in the first part, and then between Michael (Schumacher), Jenson (Button) and (Mark) Webber in the second part.

"I think we are in a part of the championship with very interesting races that are coming now. So I think after these races we will better know whether (we have) an entertaining show or not," he added.

Virgin F1 car fuel tank not big enough! :(

New Formula One team Virgin Racing have been given permission to change their car's undersized fuel tank.

A spokeswoman for the FIA confirmed the specification change had been given the green light, on the basis that the car could run out of petrol before the end of races.

"We recently applied to the FIA for permission to change the size of the fuel tank on the grounds of reliability and we are pleased that the FIA has granted us this permission," Virgin technical director Nick Wirth said ahead of the Australian Grand Prix.

"It has become clear during pre-season testing and our debut race in Bahrain that our fuel tank capacity is marginal and if not addressed there is the possibility that fuel pick-up could become an issue in certain circumstances.

"We thank the FIA for permitting this change, which we expect to introduce in the early part of the European season."

The BBC cited an F1 source as saying that the fuel tank change would require modification to the car's chassis, a move that would require mandatory crash testing.

Virgin drivers Timo Glock and Lucas di Grassi were unable to finish in Bahrain due to mechanical failures.
