Breakfast Track

Postby EarlYoung » Wed Jan 20, 2016 1:04 pm

Oh, the Joy of Retirement. Two hour breakfasts, accompanied by my favourite music on the 50's whilst "Dag" plays on the telly. Bliss. The world is obviously waiting with bated breath to know what I am listening to, so, here is what is going down chez moi today.

Miles Davis "Chez Le Photographe Du Motel"

Improvised in two days in Paris in December 1957.

My favourite film of the last few years is "The Grand Beauty" by Paolo Sorrentino. This was used on the soundtrack and is sublime.

Bleak and wintry in Scotland today. Time for a dip in a Brazilian pool I think.

Stripped to the bone bleak urban funk from Curtis Mayfield. The guitar and horns are astonishing:

Something suitably solemn for Sunday:

Everyone loves Ennio of course. My favourite period was the 1960's & 70's as after that some of it could sound overly pan-pipey. Here from 1972 is an obscure gem. I think he must have been listening to Bitches Brew around that period.

Should you ever be in a position where you need to get a room full of people dancing joyously, perhaps try this. Driven by the iconic rhythm section behind so many Philly sides of Young, Harris and Baker this Tom Moulton mix is tighter than a snare & god those string charts.

Great track to play driving down the motorway as dawn breaks. Don't get me started on the 15 seconds of orgasmic bliss at 3' 30":

"Someone who says she's my friend
Told me you've been untrue again
Oh you still haven't learned it's wrong to
Hurt the girl that you belong to
What am I gonna do with you, hey baby?"

One of my favourite songs from the "I know he's a cad and a bounder but what is a girl to do ?" sixties school. Genius from Russ Titelman & Gerry Goffin.

James Jamerson, who played bass on many iconic Tamla Motown records, would have been 80 today. Impossible to choose one, but, this will do:

I can't seem to view the video links you have posted. I have had this trouble when posting videos before. It may be that I'm not in the U.K.

Jerome Kern and Dorothy Fields wrote this life affirming song. This joyous swinging performance by Errol Garner is my favourite of those I know.
