Matt,

Benchmark have turned power supply thinking on its head. Starting with the DAC2 they have deliberately used a switched Mode power supply instead of a linear one. They use the same power supply in their new power amp.

The performance figures speak for themselves - they get better measured performance than anything else on the market!!!!

Go figure - by shifting all power supply noise outside of the audio bandwidth they are able to achieve unprecedented results!!!!!!

You can read about it on their website. I just compared a DAC1 with the new DAC3 and I am amazed at the difference - in a sense it is like OLED or Plasma TV to use an analogy - blacks are BLACK!!!!

I guess it's just a matter of correct implementation. Benchmark certainly has a good reputation.
The Dac 3 seems to use the older ESS 9028 chip though, not the newer 9038, so I'd wonder if it actually does have the best measurements on the market.

You nailed it right there!!!!

The Benchmark DAC2 measures brilliantly well and uses 4 x ESS 9018's
Even though the OPPO Sonica DAC and OPPO UDP 205 use ESS 9038's ..........I would still put my money on the new Benchmark DAC3 with it's "older" ESS 9028 having superior SQ...........and the DAC2 as well!!!!

A LOT of things have to be addressed apart from just having the latest DAC chipset.

Like every other piece of audio gear though.........measurements are a useful guide but IMHO and IME......your ears are still the best one!!!!

Yes, measurements are a good guide, but I would trust my ears after that.
I would say the Benchmarks do better the UDP 205, but that's a complete disc player, not just a Dac.

I have been listening to the DAC3 from a Benchmark for about a month. Same balanced detailed neutral sound as DAC1 and DAC2

However, this by far the best I have ever heard from digital.

The clarity is absolutely astonishing yet the sound is more natural than anything I have ever experienced with digital. Like vinyl on the best day with the best pressing and best equipment but with the DAC3 ALL digital files sounds superb. Individual instruments can be heard more clearly than I have ever experienced.

I was not excited with the DAC2 vs DAC1 (felt incremental to me) but with the DAC3 they have made a giant leap.

Sounds good Shadorne, did you get a home demo of the Dac 3 then? Did you compare it to anything else, like the Mytek Brooklyn?

Yes, unfortunately I'm having to move back and forth between England and Turkey, and under the current circumstances it's so difficult to keep my beloved ATC system! :(

If the sale doesn't happen soon or to my satisfaction then I will simply find a way to keep them.
A real bargain for those who can afford them! :)
