Hello all!
It seems I move from my passive SCM 50 classic with Plinius SA103 amp to active SCM 50 tower version :) Buying a second SA103 as monoblock would be very expensive for me. I hope that I will not regret it. Because I really liked the Plinius ATC combo sound))

Is there any sound difference between classic and tower versions ?
As it seems to me, the original stands for classic are not the best solution for vibration isolation speaker from the floor. Classic/Tower also have a different height which can affect the sound.

Hi xtraktz

Do you have the active 50's yet?
I'm sure you'll love them and they do represent great value compared to passive + good amplification.

Cheers
Matt

What preamplifier can you recommend for them?

When I had scm50asl's, I used a passive volume control direct from a CD player, then an ATC CA2, then a Matrix Quattro Dac/Pre which I still use today. I'm tempted by a Mytek Brooklyn Dac/Pre.

Currently I have Linx Hilo DAC Thunderbolt version connected to mac mini. It has a digital volume control on the line output (XLR) and 8 gain sets. It also has an analog volume control on the monitor output (TRS), but monitor output has slightly worse parameters S/N relative to the line-out. Is there any point to add SCA2 if I only have one digital source? Will it add more soundstage, body, depth, dynamic without losing transparency? Does it give a benefits on lower volume levels?

Some people swear by a dedicated pre amp like the sca2, they say it grips the speakers properly and gives more of everything. Others choose the Dac/pre route for simplicity and often stating a better sound with less in the signal chain.
