Over a year (?), just over 200 members...

Postby AlmaataKZ » Tue Dec 28, 2010 11:49 pm

So, how do we get more members? How can we increase the popularity of the forum? How do we make it more visible? in UK and international?
Can we put some ads in mags? Flyers at hifi shows? I am prepared to make an appropriate contribution to support.
Any other ideas?
Any direction that the founders (Rick et al) want the forum to take?
What is/should be the future of this forum?
Can/should it be closer to ATC themselves? More posts from ATC surely will greatly benefit both the members and the forum.

A sensible time to make this point I think AlmaataKZ.

There still seems to be a steady organic growth to the numbers, which we should probably be quite pleased with. But more would obviously be better.

I'm not sure that advertising or producing flyers is going to be viable. I suspect it would be expensive for the gains in numbers achieved, and when no-one makes money out of the forum it is obviously simply paying for numbers and nothing else.

More input from ATC would definitely help - but that's their decision at the end of the day. I wonder if it would be possible for them to refer all purchasers of ATC to the forum? That's the one possible area a flyer might help - flyer with every purchase alongside the manual with each piece of kit sold?

Otherwise, I would say more proactive word of mouth is what might do it. Many members are on other forums and will therefore know of ATC users who are not on this forum. If they can be informed of ATC forums (without breaching other forum rules) that seems the best way to increase numbers.

Also, ATC has a big international presence, and quite a number of forum users are from outside the UK. I wonder if they might be able to spread the word? In particular, getting some non-UK dealers on the site and seeing if they would inform customers of the forum might assist. At the moment, Rick seems to be the only dealer who does this, and there would be fewer rivalry issues if this was also done internationally.

Look forward to other suggestions :)

Hi

I don't know if this is relevant to this discussion, but everyone on here seems very polite and supportive of one another, which is highly unusual on a hifi forum. I presume all the members are aware of the attitudes that exist on similar sites elsewhere on the web. I wonder whether actively soliciting new members might eventually lead to similar "animated" discussions appearing in threads on this forum and whether members would welcome such changes or not.

I would also like to see a more active involvement from ATC themselves, both in terms of them releasing general information and in responding to ATC related issues raised on the forum. For the moment though, do we actually know for sure whether ATC actually take note of anything that is posted on this forum ?

Happy New Year !!

Chris

I agree entirely with this sentiment. I think if there were a sudden explosion in membership this might happen. However, with the current organic growth, I think people have a read around and notice the tenor of most threads and will go along with the friendly atmosphere. My guess would be if this organic growth were simply a bit faster, this would continue - which is why I think more proactive word of mouth and an increase in the number of non-UK users might increase the numbers whilst retaining the supportive atmosphere.

There was a period during the autumn where there were on, not a lot, but quite frequently and posted quite a bit. My guess (and hope) would be they were too busy to come on in the lead up to Christmas but we might see a bit more of them in the New Year. I don't know if Rick might be able to gently encourage them? :)

Im sure there has to be a few air traffic controllers who own ATC speakers.

They have one of, if not the most stressful jobs going, so may enjoy relaxing with a glass of wine listening to some ATC's which they may have come across by chance while googling their Air Traffic Control forum :)

i think i would rather have just over 200 member's that contributed constructive post's that will encourage & help other member's through high's & low's than 2000 member's just waiting for an easy sarcastic pop at people that make a mistake or spell something wrong or even just because they dont like some of there idea's, Benny.

I've had a bit of a look around at other forums. Given that this is a manufacturer specific forum, we're obviously never going to have a comparable number of members to WHF, AV Forums, or HeadFi etc. Even with something like WHF, there's a massively inflated membership from, say, people who just register to take part in competitions. If you look at how many members are online at any one time it might be 10-30. So us having 2-8 is not so bad. And in terms of regular contributors there might be only 30-50, where we have 10-20, so again not bad.

Also looking at manufacturer specific forums - Naim has a huge number, but they're a bit of a law unto themselves. Cyrus Unofficial has a bit under 700 - but has been going for years, has a much bigger profile and I'm sure many more owners than ATC. Even Martin Logan forums, based in the US so 10x as many population has well under 2,000. They have many more guests, but there will be many more owners / people considering purchasing.

So 200 members (in a bit under year - forum started in February) is not too bad I would say :) We continue to grow steadily and organically - there have been quite a number of new members in the last few weeks. And I agree with what Benny and Chris say - basically 'quality' is better than quantity. We also have a number of extremely knowledgable contributors (this too is growing, eg Shadorne), with people who've been into hifi for many many years, tried many other systems, now have truly high end kit and really know what they're talking about (and able to help people like me ;) :D ).

I think given that we all share a love of ATC there's perhaps less scope for friction than on other forums, but this really is a friendly, helpful and supportive place to be. And with a number of very knowledgeable contributors, I do think the forum will be a great resource for all things ATC in the long term. So whilst we contine our steady growth I would say all is good :D

I saw that post in reply to your update and really thought, why on earth post something like that  , surely post nothing if you've got nothing positive to say. (He's also completely wrong btw ;) ) Just had a look at your response, nice one 8-) As you say, not rude at all, but worth a response.

And thanks Matt :D

Hi guys

Thanks for your comments.

I am happy with the way the Forum is moving forward. I also feel the ideal way attract more members is through word of mouth (this is how i've heard about other forums over the years).

I know Ben from ATC has been extremely busy over the last four months or so and yes Ben does also take into account members comments.

All the best

Rick.

The CU was my first forum in 2006 and really got my HiFi and journey to where it is today. :D Cost me though! :o

The CU has evolved as so many on there have either moved on from Cyrus products or stick around as it is a nice place to chat and not full of idiots. I am sure we dont want lots of unecessaries on here like some other forums attract do we!

What I will say is for this to work well and to have good HiFi chats it should not be solely about ATC products. Of course it is named an ATC forum and hence there will be in the main ATC chat but people should not focus 100% on that I feel. You need to know and hear about other makes to contribute and advise correctly I feel. All healthy I say......just my two pence worth chaps ;)
