A lot of spam ?

Postby tw99 » Wed Oct 24, 2012 5:18 pm

There seems to be a lot of spam on the forum in the last few days (much more than there has been real content). Is there any way the moderator(s) can beef up the protection ?

Hi tw99

Unfortunately, we seem to get waves of spam. Sometimes we can get a couple of months of nothing, or very little, then a load all at once.
I know certain forums have a 1 post per minute limit, or other methods of preventing spam, but i'm not sure whats possible on this forum. I know the one post per minute can be very annoying in use.

Cheers
Matt

I'd love to meet the morons who do it. I don't understand the mindset. On this forum the same person will frequently go to the trouble of claiming a nationality and location, an occupation, likes and dislikes etc. Yet they know their posts are deleted sometimes immediately and certainly very quickly, and no-one clicks on their idiotic links.

Anyway, what Matt said. There's no 'protection' as such, a post limiter would definitely be annoying. We delete the spam as soon as we come on and see it, but unfortunately it's been fairly persistent in the last few days. Apologies for any inconvenience, we will get to it as soon as we can.

Thanks. I've done a bit of Forum admin in the past, and found that it can often help to turn on more security at the registration stage - e.g. Captchas, a question that a spammer wouldn't be able to answer, manual account approval... Not sure how much protection this version of phpBB supports however.
