ATC SCM40 MK.1 ?

Postby Mariner » Fri Apr 24, 2020 12:25 pm

Is a SCM40 (first version) a real upgrade to a SCM20 (also non SL) ?
I asked that because of the legendary mid driver.
Or is it better to save more money and wait longer for a used SCM50?
My listening room is only 16sqm.
And the need for a deep bass is managed by a C1 sub which works great in my room .
Thanks for any suggestions!

3-way good. Active good. To my mind one of the substantial differences between 40 and 50 is the 50's SL bass, so if the choice is between 40 and _non-SL_ 50, and you see a good deal on 40s then that's okay. You could buy older 50s and upgrade to SL though, that would justify it more.

Are you confident you've already addressed positioning of speakers and listeners in the room, and the room acoustics themselves with maybe treatments, as much as is practical? If not, then typically the biggest gains could be achieved from those things.

Thanks a lot for your thoughts!
My room is optimized with several acoustic pannels.
And it isn't so that I am not satisfied with my SCM20 in my room .
It is amped by a McIntosh MC2205 , and that combination satisfied me for almost 30 years.
But I have heard so many good things about the mid unit in the bigger ATC's, that I asked myself
if there might be a better sound than with my SCM20?
The mid unit has a wide frequency which is, from my point of view, the most important
in the whole frequency band for listening.
So can anyone tell me, who made the change from speaker with or without that unit,
in what kind the sound had changed.
I believe that it might be clear difference in a human voice.
We are used to hear voices so that the difference here is more easy to recognize.
Maybe anyone has some experiences?
