What amp for the SCM19?

Postby Simna » Tue Oct 11, 2016 11:31 am

Hej

Yesterday I ordered a pair SCM19 in spite of the fact that none of my two amps sounds really good with them!
My Musical Fidelity M6i sounds rather good, maybe a little thin, with good recordings but harsh to very harsh with other recordings. My Tube Technology Unisis Signature (2x35w) have a warmer and nicer sound but lacks the bigger sound stage and cleaner bass that the MF M6i delivers (brobably due to the lack of muscles).
With other words, I need a amp which is a combination of both. I've been thinking about a ss poweramp and a tube preamp.

Any suggestions in the price range up to 3800-4000 £ (40000-43000 SEK). Or cheaper :D

What do you SCM19 owners use?

It might not be too late to alter your order to this: http://positive-feedback.com/reviews/ha ... er-system/

Yes, I know that SCM19A would be the best solution, but then I have to buy a pre amp also which will be another 2200-2500 £. So 3800-4000 £ is max.

The ATC P1 sounds very good with them. A used Bryston 3B or 4B sounds pretty good with them; older ones tend to be harsher than new were ones. Since many of them over 10 years old are still around, those should be recapped.

For several years i have used Naim amps with the ATC passives, and I find the NAP250.2 work wonderfully with the ATC SCM11s.... really swing with gorgeous detail and depth. Certainly worth an audition if you can..

Wait a second, you have a preamp now! Your musical fidelity has unbalanced preamp outputs, so you can use that with 19A's. You only need a pair of RCA (preamp) to XLR (19A) cables. Unless you have a lot of RF around your house it will work fine.

Hej

No, I don't have a preamp. I have two integritet amps. One Tube Technology Unisis Signature with Genalex tubes (el84 driver tubes, only 2x35w) and a Musical Fidelity M6i.

I have tested Audio Analogue Puccini, Hegel H20, Primare I32 and Copland CTA 405A (2x50w tupe amp with kt120 driver tubes). I didn't like any of the ss amplifiers, but Copland CTA 405A was very nice. Good soundstage and body, nice warm midrange and good treble and punchy bass. Maybe I need a little more open sound. So I'm thinking about testing new speaker cables or maybe try to refurnish a little. Okay, it's just 2x50w, but I think it's enough for me. I have a rather small room (17 sq.m.) and I don't like really high volumes (neither do my cats).

I actually like my old Tube Technology best, but the soundstage and the bass (and the output) are better with Copland.

+1

For the Nord. I'm running a pair of SCM11s and the sound is superb. The amp has bags of power and has a very uncoloured/detailed sound. I first used the Sonic Imagery op amp version but then tried the Sparkos, preferring the slightly more fuller 'flavour'. Anyway, check out the website and read the recent excellent reviews.

Hi, i run the older scm 19's biamping with 2 Nelson Pass poweramps, 30 watts each....sounds very good . And what you might expect from a loudspeaker who can have 300 watts is not true ......i mean 30 watts wouldn't be sufficient. I can play very loud without any stress in the soundscape and full controll in the bassdriver! Ok , admitting Pass isnt very affordable but you can find them on the 2dhand market for reasonable prices.Goodluck and just give it a try.....biamping is very near to full active imho, cheers Al

lol.....must be the Pass amps maybe ?....the scm 40 doesnt have a sl bassdriver , does it ?.....and i admit active is still superior ...i do compare a lot however and the differences between biamping an old scm 19 and putting an amppack on them is very very small. In this case the Pass amps vs the Atc amps and on the other hand the phasing can be done better actively....no matter we agree or disagree(hifi guys always do)...the voicing of a loudspeaker is never the same, so we cant compare scm40s ans scm19s at all. Now to get the ball roling ;) You know what?
Every speakerdesigner knows building a 3way is impossible :D :D ....but they will never admit it...cheers again

I agree the advantage of active over passive is probably greater with 3-ways.
