“I was very happy with my monitor speakers, but they seemed to lack bass extension; Matt Colton has active ATC SCM150 ASL PROs in his room, so I thought that an ATC amp might give me more bass… the difference wasn’t subtle with the P2 PRO.” – Alchemy Mastering Founder & Director Barry Grint, 2017.

Generating twice the power of its smaller P1 sibling, the P2 will drive the most challenging loudspeakers with ATC’s signature virtues of wide bandwidth and ultra-low distortion…

LONDON, UK: specialist British loudspeaker drive unit and complete sound reproduction system manufacturer ATC is proud to announce that mastering engineer extraordinaire Barry ‘Bazza’ Grint has acquired a P2 PRO Dual Mono Power Amplifier — a true dual mono design delivering 300W of continuous power simultaneously from both channels to drive the most challenging loudspeaker loads with ATC’s signature virtues of wide bandwidth and ultra-low distortion — to enhance the full range monitoring system in his room at Alchemy Mastering, one of the world’s leading lights in half-speed and pure analogue vinyl mastering…

Mastering engineer extraordinaire Barry Grint’s ‘lifelong’ love affair with The Dark Art Of Audio Mastering — to paraphrase the appropriate website wording for Alchemy Mastering (http://www.alchemymastering.com), the company he founded in 1998, having previously worked at Abbey Road, Porky’s Mastering, Tape One, and the legendary Trident Studios — led him to a life less ordinary that has been truly extraordinary. “I always wanted to work in a recording studio, but getting in has always been difficult,” he notes. “I had many jobs beforehand, but eventually I started as a tea boy at Trident Studios. Seeing first-hand what being a studio engineer actually entailed, I felt that it wasn’t quite right for me. On the third floor there was disc cutting — vinyl and cassette being the only formats at the time. I immediately felt at home, starting in the tape and cassette copy room, before moving up to vinyl mastering in 1984.”

The bright-eared Barry Grint was quick off the mark in making his mastering mark. 1984 alone saw his mastering mojo working wonderfully on classic vinyl singles for Duran Duran (‘The Wilds Boys’), Foreigner (‘I Want To Know What Love Is’), Madonna (‘Like A Virgin’), Van Halen (‘Jump’), and ZZ Top (‘Gimme All Your Lovin’’). Thereafter, things went seriously stratospheric as Barry Grint went on to work with a roll call of rock and pop greats such as Bon Jovi, David Bowie, Paul McCartney, Oasis, Prince, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones, to list but a few notable names. Speaking of names, the master(ing) craftsman identified his vinyl work by etching ‘Bazza’ in the run out-groove with various incarnations including Bazza @ Abbey Road, Bazza @ Tape One, Bazza @ Porky’s putting in an appearance throughout the years.

Yet Barry Grint has witnessed a lot of industry changes — technological or otherwise — in a celebrated career spanning five distinctive decades. Given his mastering pedigree, perhaps it was inevitable that he would one day become a master of his own destiny at Alchemy Mastering in Soho, which went on to become one of the UK’s foremost mastering facilities before leasing issues at its ‘high-flying’ Centre Point office tower London location left its founder rethinking and, ultimately, relocating somewhat closer to terra firma. Its current location in an elegant West London mews houses three acoustically-tuned studios with natural daylight designed by the three ‘Alchemists’ — Barry Grint and fellow Directors Matt Colton and Phil Kinrade — themselves, each equipped with full-range monitoring systems and a wide range of vintage and cutting-edge high-end analogue and digital hardware and software processors, perfect for pursuing their sought-after craft. “We all react to what’s coming out of the speakers, and we make our judgements based on how that sounds in the room,” Matt Colton claimed, soon after receiving the coveted Music Producers Guild Mastering Engineer of the Year award in 2013.

As a full member, Barry Grint is no stranger to the MPG (Music Producers Guild) himself, representing them when working with the EBU (European Broadcasting Union) to create a standard for embedding the ISRC (International Standard Recording Code) within BWF (Broadcast Wave Format) audio, adopted by the main manufacturers of mastering software internationally. But back in the mastering hot seat within Mastering Two — Barry Grint’s mastering studio for digital, CD, and vinyl mastering at Alchemy Mastering — things get more personal. “The choice of equipment is a very personal thing,” its owner-occupier opines. “I was very happy with my monitor speakers, but they seemed to lack bass extension; Matt Colton has active ATC SCM150ASL PROs in his room, so I thought that an ATC amp might give me more bass.”

Cue delivery of a P2 PRO Dual Mono Power Amplifier — a true dual mono design delivering 300W of continuous power simultaneously from both channels to drive the most challenging loudspeaker loads with ATC’s signature virtues of wide bandwidth and ultra-low distortion — on trial. The result? “The bass extension was great, but there was also a noticeable improvement overall — a smoothness that gave improved detail and clarity,” continues the seriously impressed Barry Grint. “The difference wasn’t subtle with the P2 PRO. I called Ben Lilly, Technical Sales Manager at ATC, and told him he couldn’t have the demo unit back until he had sent me the one I bought!”

Beneficiaries of this latest acquisition already encompasses a lengthening list of current and established artists alike, as Barry Grint reveals: “Remastering Jeff Wayne’s War Of The Worlds, The Stranglers, Declan McKenna, Tom Odell, Sean Paul, Roger Waters; vinyl mastering for All Tvvins, Gorillaz, Laura Mvula, Little Mix, Radiohead, Rag’n’Bone Man, The Libertines, The Rolling Stones…”

So, yes, Barry Grint has witnessed a lot of industry changes in a celebrated career spanning five distinctive decades — not least the putative passing of vinyl into the annals of reproductive audio history only for it to triumphantly return relatively recently, as evidenced by Alchemy Mastering making a name for itself as one of the world’s leading lights in half-speed and pure analogue vinyl mastering: “When I started, people recorded in recording studios and mobile studios were big articulated lorries loaded with massive Neve, Cadac, or Trident desks and multitrack tape machines. Today, digital recording has made available amazing recording spaces. Sometimes this means that for some projects the mastering room is the only controlled listening environment, one where a good speaker/amp combination is vital. This is why we went with ATC.”

The Ear reviews ATC's P2 300w/ch dual mono power stereo power amplifier

"I suspect that the P2 will drive just about everything out there, it’s just a question of taste as to whether you will like the result. ATC make no nonsense, down to earth amplifiers and loudspeakers based on decades of experience in the pro and consumer markets, and they make them in Gloucestershire, England in an unprepossessing building. This combined with a singularly indifferent attitude to advertising means that ATC products offer better value than most, in fact there aren’t many companies that compete on that front and even fewer who have such a solid track record. In other words this is not only a very capable amplifier it has pedigree and it’s sensibly priced. What more do you want?"

Hi-Fi News (March 2017) reviews ATC's P2 300w/ch dual mono power stereo power amplifier

“the P2 is one of those subtle components that quietly works its magic on you, until you suddenly realise that it is doing everything brilliantly but without any fuss or melodrama. Put simply, it just sounds ‘right’.”

“In terms of detail, the P2 struck gold once again. Instruments were lifelike and beautifully atmospheric, no matter whether a recording featured a soft solo acoustic ensemble or a grand orchestral bombardment.”

Hand-built by ATC in the UK, the P2 class A/B stereo power amplifier is designed to complement the brand’s range of hi-fi preamplifiers, both aesthetically and operationally. Rated at 300W continuous power per channel and developed in tandem with the P2 Pro studio amplifier, the ATC P2 is a Dual Mono design, keeping the power supplies, signal and return paths discreet. This approach ensures that the amplifier will achieve the maximum signal separation with minimal crosstalk, and that intermodulation between channels via the power supplies is reduced to an absolute minimum across a frequency range of 400kHz. It also means that the power delivery from one channel cannot affect the specified power available from the other.

Within a new low-vibration chassis design featuring a precision machined 12.7mm brushed aluminium front panel, the P2’s layout includes a massive, custom-made 400 VA low-noise transformer for each channel and an output stage involving 3 pairs of MOSFET devices per channel to achieve peak current output of over 15 amps. ATC’s unique “grounded source” output stage ensures smooth power delivery and extremely low harmonic distortion. The gain of the P2 matches that of the lower power P1 (150W/ch) so that they can be used together in bi-amp or tri-amp systems, connected via the amplifier ‘Link’ phono inputs/outputs.

The ATC P2 offers balanced XLR and unbalanced phono inputs, ‘link’ phono outputs, proprietary 4mm speaker terminals, and IR remote control.

ATC's new CDA2 MK2 CD/DSD DAC/Preamplifier -

Wholesale upgrades to ATC’s leading source product deliver audiophile levels of accuracy and dynamics to music reproduction, combined with extraordinary value for money…

ATC's new CDA2 MK2 CD/DSD DAC/Preamplifier

ATC is extremely proud to announce the arrival of the CDA 2 MK2 CD/DSD DAC/Preamp, which represents a re-engineering of its predecessor in all the key performance areas. Developed as the ideal partner for ATC’s latest P2 power amplifier and active speaker designs, the CDA MK2 combines convenient USB access to high-resolution music streaming with an upgraded CD transport and DAC board, dedicated headphone amplification, expanded input choices and analogue circuits redesigned to deliver an extremely wide and flat frequency response with very low distortion.

Joining rear panel coaxial and optical 192kHz inputs, the CD MK2’s new high resolution USB input is capable of handling PCM data up to 384kHz and also DSD64, DSD128 and DSD256 natively. Excellent jitter rejection ensures that signal integrity is maintained even with poorer quality sources and over long cable runs. Completing the CDA MK2’s wider digital interface, a new TEAC-supplied CD transport delivers faster play and seek times, much lower mechanical noise and improved error correction.

The meticulously re-engineered analogue circuits optimise ATC’s implementation of a new premium 32-bit AKM DAC, selected for exceptionally low noise and distortion. Supporting the DAC, the CDA MK2’s power supply architecture employs no fewer than nine additional high performance voltage regulators, and local power supply decoupling has been improved from the MK1, yielding further performance gains.

In another refinement, both input and output gain stages have been improved by an arrangement of discrete op amps comprising six common gain blocks: two for left and right input buffering, and four to provide a “true” differential output for the left and right channels. The positive and negative drivers are arranged in parallel to ensure that the signal delays and phase shifts are identical on both sides. The output stages are configured as unity gain complementary compound (Sziklai) pairs, biased in class A.

These major design revisions combined with many marginal gains (from hand-soldering surface mount components on the legs of specific chips for instance) ensure that the CDA2 MK2’s analogue stage exhibits exceptionally low noise and distortion across a very wide bandwidth.

Also benefitting are twin rear-mounted analogue phono/RCA inputs and an additional aux analogue input via 3.5mm mini jack, which is equipped with high input sensitivity for improved compatibility with phones, tablets and other low output portable devices. Additionally the CDA MK2 benefits from a revised high performance headphone amplifier capable of driving headphones from 30 – 600 ohms, delivering exceptional results from the vast array of modern headphone designs. Output is via a rear panel mounted 6.35mm jack.

The CDA2 MK2’s chassis is constructed from a combination of steel and aluminium and uses constrained layer damping to control panel resonances. The front panel is machined from an extruded section of 13mm/0.5” aluminium alloy with a brushed and anodised silver finish.

ATC Transducer. The sound of accuracy. Naturally.

Dual Suspension tweeter -

Image

The additional stability over other designs negates the use of ferro-fluid, so ATC tweeters perform at their best for longer, and the magnetic gap can be made smaller, further improving power handling.

Image

ATC's approach to tweeter design is unique in the marketplace. By incorporating a secondary suspension component the moving assembly is naturally constrained to travel only in the axial direction. The result is a design that suppresses rocking modes and ensures lower distortion levels. The additional stability that this approach provides over more conventional tweeter construction negates the need for ferro-fluid (usually required for cooling, damping, etc). As a consequence, the magnetic gap can be made smaller allowing ATC tweeters to not only perform optimally, for longer, but also offer improved power handling over conventional designs.

While this unique tweeter topology offers superior performance, the resultant increased moving mass and overall complexity must be offset and overcome by the perfect alignment of all components. Consequently manufacturing and assembly demands exceptional care and accuracy - a level of capability that ATC excels at.

The standard SH25-76 and its ultimate 'S' spec stable mate approach these engineering challenges in different but equally successful ways. The standard tweeter has a novel and lighter moving mass bracing component, while the 'S' spec driver has an exceptionally powerful motor assembly that, when combined with the optimally stiff and lightweight coil former, delivers vanishing low levels of odd harmonic distortion and a well controlled extended frequency response beyond the limit of human hearing.

Fully Optimised Neodymium Motor Assemblies -

Image

Each tweeter motor assembly employs a magnetically annealed top plate and huge N48M Neodymium ring magnet, the geometry of which has been individually optimised using finite element analysis to ensure the best possible performance. Achieving an incredibly high flux density of over 2.0T in the magnetic gap, the magnet assembly of the SH25-76S is fully saturated and therefore free from the effects of flux modulation in the surrounding metalwork, lowering odd harmonic distortion to below -70dB across the operating band. The high levels of flux density in the gap combined with a short coil long gap configuration result in a linear and extended frequency response beyond 20kHz.

The curved SCM40A is an active version of ATC's highly successful curved SCM40 passive monitors. The 3-way design, employing all hand built ATC drive units is complimented with a built-in 235Watt class AB tri-amplifier. The MOSFET based amplifier is a modified version of that found in ATC's larger active monitors, the SCM50ASL, SCM100ASL and SCM150ASL.

Sharing technology with the renowned ATC Soft Dome mid-range drive unit, the new tweeter employs a unique dual suspension system suppressing rocking modes even at high power output levels. The ATC configuration of a short edge-wound voice coil in a long, narrow magnetic gap ensures exceptionally low distortion throughout its operating band and removes the need for ferrofluids, which can dry out over time, compromising performance.

A complex, shaped, soft-domed diaphragm extends high frequency range and offers a smooth off-axis response. The tweeter’s 15,000 gauss (1.5 tesla) neodymium magnet has a black heat-treated top plate, which dissipates heat away from the voice coil to maintain high power handling and low power compression. A precision-machined 5.5mm rigid alloy waveguide provides optimum dispersion, a flat on-axis frequency response and resonance-free operation.

Positive Feedback reviews ATC's SCM19AT SL Active Tower monitors

http://positive-feedback.com/reviews/ha ... er-system/

“…also takes a company with diverse engineering expertise to cover electronics, mechanics, electro-mechanics, and other disciplines and this is rare. ATC clearly has the engineering talent required as they have been in business over 40 years and producing active speakers for many of them. The SCM19ATs are a wonderful advancement in the state of the art of active loudspeakers. You could easily spend three times as much on comparable separate components and not do as well. I strongly encourage you to seek out the ATCs and give them a listen.”

The Ear reviews ATC's SCM19AT SL Active Tower monitors

"I could go on but hopefully the crux has been communicated, this ATC like its range mates is not designed to elaborate on the signal, it exists to let you hear it like it is. In this respect it sounds more like a studio monitor than your average domestic loudspeaker and what this does is focus on the playing, singing and performance rather than the sound. So ATCs are speakers for music junkies, especially those who like their music at the same sort of sound pressure levels enjoyed by many musicians. They are a blank canvas at the mercy of the signal, get that right and you have an unusually good loudspeaker, one that will keep you enthralled to the end of every album."

Hi-Fi Choice reviews ATC's SCM19AT SL Active Tower monitors

"Clearly shot through with the solid engineering and acoustic expertise loved by fans of ATC around the world, the SCM19A is an important and effective addition to the company’s extensive domestic line up. Used in anger with high octane rock it will make most similarly sized passive floorstanders sound somewhat flat and loose. But it does the delicate stuff with great care and finesse as well. A better advert for properly implemented active design at a relatively sane price I’ve yet to hear.”

David Vivian, Hi-Fi Choice August 2016.

ATC Loudspeaker Technology’s SCM19 Active Tower SL speaker system will deliver the company’s reference-quality audio from an elegantly curved floor-standing design, just 370mm wide and under a metre in height. Identical acoustically to ATC’s award-winning passive SCM19SL 2-way system but utilising the 19 litre volume in a slim tower format, the SCM19AT SL combines high aesthetic appeal with the widely acknowledged performance benefits of ATC active design to create a compelling speaker proposition for music lovers.

The SCM19AT SL’s braced, sealed and curved multi-layer laminated cabinet, which is precision-finished in cherry or black ash real-wood veneer, provides a rigid and optimally damped environment for the Company’s acclaimed SH25-76 Soft Dome tweeter and 150mm Super-Linear mid/bass driver. Drive units are individually powered by an upgraded bi-amp pack (also proprietary), comprising ATC’s discrete MOSFET Class A/B modules, providing 32W of continuous power to the HF section and 150W to the bass.

ATC SH25-76 Tweeter

Sharing technology with the renowned ATC Soft Domed mid-range drive unit, the SCM19AT SL's tweeter employs a unique dual suspension system, designed to suppress rocking modes even at high power output levels. The ATC configuration of a short edge-wound voice coil in a long, narrow magnetic gap ensures exceptionally low distortion throughout the tweeter’s operating band and removes the need for ferrofluids, which can dry out over time, compromising performance. A complex-shaped, soft-domed diaphragm extends high frequency range and offers a smooth off-axis response. The tweeter’s 15,000 gauss (1.5 tesla) neodymium magnet has a black heat-treated top plate, which dissipates heat away from the voice coil to maintain high power handling and low power compression. ATC SB75-150 SL mid/bass driver

The SCM19AT SL’s 150mm ATC SL mid/bass driver utilises a carefully weighted doped fabric cone with a 75mm soft dome – exceptional for its broad and even dispersion of mid-band frequencies. The cone is driven by an ‘under-hung’ (short coil/long gap) motor using a huge 9kg ‘Super Linear’ magnet system, which is unique to ATC loudspeaker systems. The 75mm ribbon wire voice coil is meticulously milled and wound in-house by ATC. ATC’s familiar under-hung motor topology maintains linear coil force and inductance, even at high drive levels, keeping distortion low.

Image
ATC SB75-150 SL mid/bass drive unit used in curved SCM19AT SL active monitors

Electronics

The SCM19AT SL’s proprietary two-way on-board amp pack design has been revised to reduce noise and distortion (a further -10dB @ 10kHz), while achieving a lower operating temperature for improved reliability. The design includes protection circuits for both DC offset and thermal overload. Mid frequency THD is vanishingly low at 93dB/0.002%, and a very wide bandwidth of 200 kHz ensures the accurate reproduction of musical transients. ATC’s Grounded Source output stage modules are fed by a newly developed two-way active crossover section featuring 2nd order modified Butterworth circuitry with phase compensation for each crossover point. The advantage of active crossovers is that their response remains unaffected by variable voice coil impedance, while the use of phase compensation enables phase coherency at the crossover points, improving the SCM19AT SL’s tonal balance and enhancing imaging for a pin-point stereo field. As usual system input is via balanced XLR.

The ATC SCM19AT SL – the first active 19 in the Company’s history – is designed for optimum performance with the grille attached, although the difference in performance without the grill is minimal. Finished in anthracite grey, the metal grille fixes to the cabinet via hidden magnets. Designed and manufactured by ATC entirely in-house, the SCM19AT SL offers the ownership of a hand-built ruggedly engineered speaker system, world famous for musical accuracy and high power output. Like all ATC products, the SCM19AT SL is backed by a six-year warranty.

Tone Audio reviews ATC's curved SCM40A active monitors

http://www.tonepublications.com/MAGPDF/TA_073.pdf (page 138)

"Power up the SCM40A and the ears are greeted with a speaker that has a solid grip on whatever music is played. When the Romans’ “Uh Huh” via Tidal is playing, the bass frequencies penetrate while the finger snapping is rich and textured. It’s immediately apparent that these speakers rock the house."

"All ATC drivers are built in-house, not by a third party. This may cost a bit more but the result is a perfect match from design to implementation. From the one-inch soft dome tweeter, 3-inch dome midrange, and the 6.5-inch short coil bass driver, accuracy is key and the SCM40-As have it in spades. “Shine” by Years and Years is downright addicting with its electronic bass and keyboards. The sound is so spot on you almost start listening for an artifact from Pro Tools."

"The mid range is the money zone in speakers, and never is this truer than with the SCM40As. The soft dome is a revelation, especially with acoustic guitars. The romantic Mexican string style in “Puesta Del Sol” by Sean Harkness combines mellow richness with clarity. This accuracy is a hallmark of ATC."

"For those who crave accuracy above all, the ATC SCM40A is an absolute finalist for your system. As for the balance of buyers in this price range, do yourself a favor and give them an audition; hearing the dome midrange itself is worth the time."

Mark Marcantonio

"ATC is best known for their work with recording studios, and their speakers also reside in the home of many musicians. No wonder, because they offer outstanding dispersion, tonal accuracy and tremendous dynamic range along with low distortion. Their ability to play without fatigue in the recording studio translates into home speakers that can rock at concert level all day long, should you have the need."

"If you’re tired of the cable and equipment hassle, I can’t suggest a better pair of active speakers than the ATC SCM40As. They produce sound well beyond what their price tag suggests, especially considering that you will eliminate at least a few thousand dollars in speaker cables and power amplifiers."
