HEGEL IN A NUTSHELL - Each thing can be found in other amps, but NEVER all three together. This is thanks to our patented SoundEngine technology -

1. Damping factor - is basically a description for bass control. The higher the damping factor, the better the bass control. Modern amplifiers typically have lower bass control than they used to have 20 years ago. The reason is that the tools you use to increase damping factor will also increase distortion (next - 2). Not so in a Hegel amplifier. Industry average: 60-80, A really good amp: 100-150, 20 years ago: +/-150, Hegel: 1000-4000 Meaning: Hegel can boogie

2. Distortion - is a description of the level of extra sound that is generated in the amplifier. Meaning sound that is not part of the recording. Distortion usually makes an amplifier sound either muffled or harsh. It will mask the finer details. Modern amps usually have fairly low distortion, and obtain this by sacrificing bass-control (previous - 1). Hegel have among the lowest distortion on the market, and it has it in combination with extremely high bass control. Meaning - it will sound incredibly dynamic, detailed AND smooth.

3. Power consumption - The third benefit of the Sound Engine technology is low power consumption in idle. We are actually using up to 60% less power. Preventing the amplifier of running too hot, and it is good for the environment. The technical term is low bias.

In the H80 integrated amplifier with digital and analog inputs, technology from the Reference Hegel products has virtually been pouring down. Hegel's patented SoundEngine output stages, the Reference quality preamp and our critically acclaimed DACs. All in one box. A Music Machine! The H80 features 5 digital inputs with 24 bit technology, 1 true balanced analog input and 2 unbalanced analog inputs (one of which can be configured to be a Home Theatre direct input). The USB input even allows you to use the supplied remote control to manoeuver within play lists on your computer. Skip / Play / Pause the songs. And not only that, it is all plug & play. The DAC inside the H80 is based on Hegel's stand-alone DACs, which have been recognized by critics as some of the best in the industry. Much thanks to Hegel's proprietary re-clocking technique and the unique way we implement the digital components. The result of which is less additives to the music. You only hear what you are supposed to, and that makes the sound so much more life-like.

The analog stage is equally as impressive. The pre amplifier comes directly from one of our Reference standalone pre amplifiers. The design bases itself on components brought in from far beyond the regular audio industry, and the benefit is very low noise. This means that all the finer details are preserved, and you can virtually "feel" the room the artist is performing in. In many ways, we could define the sound as "the sum of all things that aren't there". But then there are all the things that actually are there. Brought there by our patented SoundEngine technology. This not only reduces distortion, but it also dramatically increase something called damping factor. This is a description of bass control, and gives the H80 a level of punch, driving power and dynamics that is completely unheard of in this price range. This combination of versatility and quality of sound is what gives it the name Music Machine.

Technical Details

- Digital inputs: 2 coax, 2 optical and 1 USB
- Analog inputs: 2 RCA unbalanced (1 configurable) and 1 XLR Balanced input

- Distortion: Less than 0.01% @ 50W 8 Ohms 1kHz
- Intermodulation: Less than 0.01% (19kHz + 20kHz)

Image
Hegel Music Systems P20 pre amplifier

The P20 is our entry level preamplifier and offers an affordable door into the Hegel Reference line of products. Designing the P20 was not a task we took lightly. Many of the ideas and concepts were taken from its bigger brother. Although scaled down, many of the good characteristics remain: the enormous soundstage, the deep rhythmic bass response, the perfect timing... In short, the sense of being there with the performers. The P20 comes with a high quality system remote control, milled out of one solid piece of aluminium. It has the same bead blasted and anodized surface finish as the preamplifier itself. You can really feel the quality each part of the P20; not only hear it. There is a total of 5 regular inputs. Both balanced and unbalanced. In addition, a special Home Theatre input allows integration in Home Theatre systems. Finally, there are both balanced and unbalanced outputs as well as a fixed line-level output.

The idea behind the P20 was, as mentioned, to offer a more affordable entry into our line of separates. But most of all, it was to set a new standard of price and performance in preamplifiers. Something we think we have achieved. The preamplifier is perhaps the most delicate unit in a sound system. Because the signal levels are so low, even the tiniest levels of noise or distortion smear the image and mask the small details that enliven the music. In designing the P20, we achieved the highest quality of sound at such a low price point by using brand new technologies, such as Silicon Germanium transistors. In addition we implemented high frequency components that were not originally designed for audio, and use them in ways that had never been done before. The result is an open and natural sounding preamplifier at a very competitive price.

P20 Technical Details -

• Remote control: Volume, source and mute controlled by the Hegel RC8
• Inputs: 1 x XLR balanced, 4 x RCA unbalanced and Home Theatre inputs
• Outputs: 1 x XLR balanced, 1 x RCA unblanced and 1 x RCA recording outputs
• Crosstalk: Less than -100dB
• Distortion: Less than 0.005%
• Intermodulation: Less than 0.01% (19kHz+20kHz)
• Dimensions/weight: 8cm x 43cm x 30cm (HxWxD), weight 10kg
• Dimensions/weight US: 3,2" x 17" x 12" (HxBxD), weight 22 lbs

The HD30 is the ultimate digital control center. It does everything you can dream of, and does so with world-class quality. There is an abundance of inputs, ranging from balanced AES/EBU and BNC connectors, to Network and USB connections - with the latter also accepting DSD signals. The built-in volume attenuator allows you to connect directly to a power amplifier or a pair of active loudspeakers. Highly advanced power supplies and careful lay-out brings the noise floor down towards a mind blowing -150dB. In short... Do you even dare to try it?

When designing a digital-to-analog converter of world class, you are essentially making a masterpiece. One for others to try and copy. It is not enough to select the best components on the market and lay them out cleverly. When creating a masterpiece, you must question if you can make it better than the best. The HD30 was just such a masterpiece project. To reach goals that, up until now, was seen as unobtainable, we needed to tweak the world’s best measuring equipment available. Just to be able to fine-tune our clock crystals and power supplies. We designed master clocks from the ground up and went to great lengths to design ultra low noise power supplies and shielding from outside interference. The results are stunning. The musicality of the HD30 is at a level never before heard. You can experience instruments and virtually feel the room they play in. You feel the smile widening in your face and the hair rising on your arms when the HD30 begins to play. The finger touching the string, a millisecond before the guitar starts to sound. The singer drawing that breath of anticipation right before he starts playing in front of a live crowd.

Whether you choose to use Apple AirPlay, a CD-player, a computer or any other device. The HD30 will bring all the music and enthusiasm that exists in the recording.

• Intermodulation: Less than 0.01% (19kHz+20kHz)
• Dimensions/weight: 8cm x 43cm x 30cm (HxWxD), weight 10kg
• Dimensions/weight US: 3,2" x 17" x 12" (HxBxD), weight 22 lbs

Enjoy The Music reviews Hegel Music Systems HD30 DAC/Streamer/Pre Amp

http://enjoythemusic.com/magazine/equip ... Review.htm

"A truly exceptional DAC!"

"Bass is wonderfully articulate, even down into the lowest reaches. When the source is up to it, like with "She's Already Made Up Her Mind," from Lyle Lovett's superb Joshua Judges Ruth (Curb), or the 2nd movement of Saint-Saëns 3rd Symphony (Reference Recordings), assuming your other electronics and speakers are up to the challenge of subsonic reproduction, the room pressurizes, with both a clear sense of speed and pitch solidity that is so accurate that you will be startled.I'm simply not used to hearing bass rendered this faithfully, effusively, or completely from a DAC, let alone one in this price range. It plays this portion of the audio spectrum accurately enough that it has the ability to trigger the "Fight or Flight" reptilian response. Because my analog system can create this sensation readily, I know it when I "feel" it. And feel it you do with the HD30!"

"It delivers an exciting and engaging sense of midrange bloom and body that is more shockingly reminiscent of really great analog than I had expected. This was very welcomed, as it created an incredibly realistic sense of physical size, location, and "space" as good as, or slightly better, than most any DAC I can recall hearing for nearly twice its asking price"

"This new Hegel further treated me to the most remarkable degree of extension, detail, and resolve in the uppermost octaves. Yet as rife with detail and sparkle as it is, this topmost frequency range is portrayed in an undisputedly relaxed fashion that is extremely captivating, again surprisingly reminiscent of a good analog playback system."

"But resolve is something at which the HD30 excels, and seemingly so effortlessly; in fact, at levels well above what I would expect in its price class. Honestly, based on its sonic performance alone, I would have put its price at $8000, or even $10,000! It is such an astonishing sonic over-achiever that I don't see this DAC leaving my system any time soon."

"The new HD30 flagship DAC from Hegel of Norway is one exceptional device. After living with it in place for some extended time, I find myself in full concurrence with Hegel founder Bent Holter's statements as to the significance of this product release in the Hegel constellation of devices. Its combination of exquisitely rendered tone (from subterranean depths to stratospheric reaches), complex and exacting texture, dynamic expressiveness (micro and especially macro!), relaxed, natural yet detailed, vivid, and comprehensive presentation, class-exceeding resolution, and spacious, focused staging and imaging, make it an over-achieving super star. All I can say is that you should not buy a DAC, not even at twice the Hegel HD30's asking price, without auditioning it first! It's your money, and you've been warned!"

"If you are a die-hard analog hound like me, or have just eschewed using a digital playback system for whatever reason (as I did until about three years ago), this may be the perfect time, and most affordable device, to get you into remarkably satisfying, enjoyable digital playback. The Hegel HD30 has changed how I look at (and listen to) DACs under $8000. I can't imagine you could find anything to quibble with at its price... You will be one satisfied music lover."

Hegel P30 and H30 Reference pre/power amplifiers

The P30 is the best preamplifier ever developed by Hegel. With its patented technology and hand matched components, the P30 is a confident contender in the race towards being the best pre amplifier in the world. Regardless of price. Despite what many hi-fi enthusiasts believe, pre amplifiers are actually one of the most difficult audio components to develop. At the same time it is one of the most important components in a well sounding system. The reason is that the signal strength is very low when entering the pre amplifier, and is therefore very susceptible high frequency noise and distortion elements. The most critical phase in the pre amplifier is the volume regulation, and in the P30 this is a master piece in it self. The physical volume control knob is only used to describe the desired volume output level to the array of Gigahertz MOS-transistors. These direct the music signal through a network of high quality resistors that reduce the signal level.

After the volume control circuit the signal is directed through the amplification circuit. For the first time ever we are using the patented SoundEngine technology in the pre amplifier. Combined with Hegel's use of hand matched FET transistors, this results in unsurpassed levels of musical distortion and noise. In total, the music signal will only pass through 2 transistors and between 1 to 3 resistors on its way through the P30. The sound you hear from the P30 can only be described as organic and very natural. To quote a journalist: "The Hegel sounds so much more natural than my previous reference. And it does so without flashing itself with gold and diamonds".

The Hegel P30 has 2 pairs of balanced inputs (XLR) and 3 regular unbalanced (RCA). In addition to this it has a Home Theatre input that allow you to integrate it in a Home Theatre system. The P30 also has a 3,5 mm IR-direct input and a 12V trigger output connector. The Hegel P30 is available in both silver and black finish, so it can be matched with the H30, H4SE and H20 power amplifiers.

The Absolute Sound Hegel H30 review

"The Hegel H30 is not just a great-sounding amplifier, it’s also a tremendous bargain. I know I’ll get letters complaining that a $15k power amplifier by definition can’t be a bargain. But what else can you call a $15,000 amplifier with massive output power, unflappable stability, and a gorgeous musical presentation that vaults it into a select league of world-class power amplifiers?"

"As adept the H30 is at all aspects of portraying the music, it’s the H30’s rendering of midrange and treble textures that makes this amplifier a standout. The Hegel coupled a warmth and lushness of timbre with tremendous clarity and resolution, a combination that is rare in an amplifier of any price. The sense of timbral realism and palpability was world-class by any measure. Moreover, it’s difficult to overstate just how greatly these qualities induced a sense of ease and deep musical involvement"

"If your amplifier budget is anywhere near $15k, the Hegel H30 should be on your short list of products to audition. You may find, as I did, that this unassuming and understated black box contains a Scandinavian surprise"

SoundStage Hi-Fi Hegel H30 review

"Don’t let Hegel Music Systems’ understated styling fool you -- the H30 is a formidable, versatile beast of an amplifier, all in good ways. In addition to its high power, tremendous bass control, and excellent compatibility with a wide variety of speakers, the H30 offers clear, incisive sound that’s as visceral as it is exciting. Other than Hegel’s lower-priced amplifiers, I’ve never encountered another amp that so well conveys a sense of immediacy -- it made me sit up and take notice -- yet is never so forward or so bold as to sound objectionable"

"Although the H30 is the biggest, most expensive product Hegel Music Systems makes, it nonetheless carries on the company’s tradition of high performance and high value -- not because it’s cheap, but because it can stand alongside the best amps made, even those costing much more"

With a power rating of more than 1,1 kW in 8 ohms it is on the verge of being easier to measure the H30 in horsepower. The massive H30 mono power amplifiers from Hegel will play any loudspeaker in the world with ease and authority. The H30 is our best power amplifier ever, and is definitely a combatant for being the best power amplifier in the world. The H30 is developed as a mono block, but there is also the possibility to use it as a stereo power amplifier to start with if you are on a budget. Progress is a one way street and so for our power amplifiers. The H30 is using a new and improved version of the patented Hegel SoundEngine amplifier technology. This further reduce all types of distortion. In addition to the improve SoundEngine we are also using the highest possible level of the Hegel FET-technology in the input stage and the voltage gain stage. This technology reduce a very specific type of distortion called Harmonic Distortion. This particular type of distortion causes what many people call "transistor sound", and this is therefore dramatically reduced in the H30. It will simply let the music reach you in a different way than what you have ever experienced before.

Normally, when you compare a less powerful amplifier with a more powerful amplifier, the most powerful will have a more potent bass, more attack and more "SLAM" than the less powerful one. This is how it works up to a certain point. The Hegel H30 is beyond this point, and all of a sudden the differences become different. The H30 will simply play with a completely undisputed control, regardless of the loudspeakers. The bass is tremendously deep, but not dominating. The level of detail in the high frequencies are unheard of, but never overbearing. Usually a demo of the H30 and P30 combination ends with clapping hands and a whispering wooooow...

So what sets the H30 apart from the H4SE? There are several technical differences. As a mono power amplifier, the H30 has a fully balanced output stage which reduces distortion and cancel out distortion. Further more, the H30 has a much more advanced input stage and voltage gain stage. Both the H4SE and the H30 uses hand matched transistors, but only the H30 uses the special combination of JFET and MOS-FET transistors. This further reduces higher order harmonic distortion in the H30. The third big difference between the two is H30's output transistors. These are of higher quality, with less distortion, than the ones in the H4SE. In addition to this, the use of dual transformers in the H30, reduces mechanical noise. The higher budget also allow the use of better parts throughout the H30.

Modern amplifiers typically have lower bass control than they used to have 20 years ago. The reason is that the tools you use to increase damping factor will also increase distortion (next - 2).

A Meme for Hegel Music Systems HD30 DAC/Streamer/Pre amp

http://enjoythemusic.com/magazine/equip ... Review.htm
Enjoy The Music reviews Hegel Music Systems HD30 DAC/Streamer/Pre Amp

Trivia:
The name Mohican is inspired by the novel “The last of the Mohicans” by James Fenimore Cooper. Written in 1826, the story takes place in 1757, during the French and Indian War. Now, the scenery inspiring this novel is found by Lake George in Upstate New York.

The idea of The Mohican has been with Hegel for quite a few years. Hegel recently found a note from one of their ”product development parties” (yes, you read it correctly) from 2010. It said ”we must make The Mohican. That final CD-Player. The best we can do. Include all those things we have learned since we made the first CD-Player back in 1997”.

Realism always struck like lightning afterwards, though. We couldn’t possibly devote the team to designing a CD-Player, when they could make AirPlay or whatever new cool thing. Or could we? The Mohican kept being brought up at every meeting, and finally in the fall of 2015 we decided. Let’s do it.

Let us not care what anyone says, what the excel sheets predicts or what competitors do. Let’s just make the best CD-Player we possibly can, within a realistic price universe. So we did, and here is The Mohican.

The Mohican is a CD-Player that runs new AKM DAC-chips in native 16 bit / 44.1 kHz resolution. The benefits of this is absolutely no re-sampling. Further, it allows the use of digital filtering that you normally cannot apply if you are to also accept high resolution files.

Related to this, running only 16 bit / 44.1 kHz makes it possible to have a very compact DAC board. When running high frequency data, compactness is always positive.

The drive mechanism (Sanyo) is also a dedicated CD audio-drive. Not a CD-ROM. The drive includes Hegel’s own servo boards, to have minimal impact on the digital signal right after it is read off the CD.

For those intending to use it as a drive-only, we have included a true 75 Ohm BNC-output connector. There are many products out there with a BNC connector, but extremely few are true 75 Ohm.

The analogue stage is almost identical to the HD30. Same goes for the ultra low noise power supplies.

THE ICING ON THE CAKE, HOWEVER... Is that The Mohican is the first CD-Player in the world to use Hegel's SoundEngine technology. Our patented real-time distortion detector/eliminator circuit. In The Mohican it is used in a very different way than normal. It isn’t used for reducing distortion in the analogue stage, but rather in the digital stage - reducing phase noise (a type of jitter). This was one of the big focuses when designing the HD30. The Mohican takes it further. Way further. By using the SoundEngine to clean up the little ”amplifier circuit” powering the clock-crystal in the DAC’s Master Clock, we have been able to push phase noise even further down, compared to the HD30. The Mohican has phase noise at almost in detectable levels.

The sound of The Mohican surprises most people by being very low key and very natural sounding. Fluid almost. Stripped of digital artifacts.

More details on The Mohican CD Player to follow.

3. Power consumption - The third benefit of the Sound Engine technology is low power consumption in idle. We are actually using up to 60% less power. Preventing the amplifier of running too hot, and it is good for the environment. The technical term is low bias.

Thousands of people still own thousands of CD's. Some even prefer playing a physical disc, rather than streaming off their phone, when really enjoying their audio system. There is no lack of CD-players, but nowadays most of them are trying to be "everything". They should play SACD, have digital inputs, support DSD and perhaps even have an app and a headphone jack. The problem is that these functionalities not only drive up the cost, but actually reduce the sound quality when playing CD. For years, we wanted to do something about that. And finally it is here... The Mohican - for people who want the best from their CD's.

The Mohican is something as rare as a dedicated CD-Player. A dedicated CD-Player using the very latest in digital processing - adapted for CD-only. The results are astonishing. Several years ago, when high resolution streaming was in its infancy (but rising), a team from Hegel had a revelation. Listening to a CD-rig, we realized that there was a lot left in CD. Since that moment, there was a never ending debate in the office. Should we go all out, making that final - phenomenal - player? The name was the first thing we decided. It had to be called The Mohican, as in the novel "The Last of the Mohicans".

This is that super player. The Mohican. It is a true CD-player, using original CD-drive mechanisms from Sanyo, updated with our own designed servo boards. It has the newest and best DAC chips, working in native 16 bit/44.1 kHz resolution. It has the best clock mechanism we have ever designed. We use our patented SoundEngine to control the clock, forcing jitter down to levels we have never reached before. Perhaps the lowest in the world. But let us not bury ourselves in the technical details. What does it do for you? It plays magically natural. It sings... fluid and with great temperament, where needed. Compared to any other digital device we have heard, it simply plays without "edges" in the sound. Almost analogue. Do you dare to listen?

Trivia:
The name Mohican is inspired by the novel “The last of the Mohicans” by James Fenimore Cooper. Written in 1826, the story takes place in 1757, during the French and Indian War. Now, the scenery inspiring this novel is found by Lake George in Upstate New York.

We recently shared our thoughts with Hegel Music Systems regarding the name they've given to their last CD Player The Mohican -

I am great believer in product names/model numbers and in this respect for a long while now my overall favourites have been NSX (New Sports eXperimental) by Honda and Kuro by Pioneer. Having thought about it over the last few months I can now happily say that The Mohican sits alongside the NSX and Kuro. The Mohican is a great name for your last CDP. You nailed it just as Honda and Pioneer did with the NSX and Kuro respectively. NSX, Kuro and The Mohican are names which inspire confidence. And just as with the NSX and Kuro I am sure The Mohican will be talked about as another great product for many, many years to come. I can't think of a better first track to hear through The Mohican then I Will Find You (Clannad - The Last of The Mohicans)

Btw, ROST (amp/DAC/streamer) the new VOICE of Hegel Music Systems is coming soon to Musicraft
