Hegel's new H360 amp/DAC -

"Yet, in summary I want to change my sporting analogy. In Hegel combining its extensive know-how around lowering distortion, eradicating noise and preserving phase and transient timing, the H360 is achieving something that is much greater than the sum of the beneficial parts. It’s the effect of watching a truly talented footballer like Messi or Cantona on the ball – time slows down and skill just expresses itself beautifully. Music I know extremely well is refreshed and the artist’s intent becomes clearer. It’s not a matter of extra detail revealed, it’s just effortless, unhampered communication. The sheer cleanliness of the H360’s delivery means I’m better able to understand and enjoy my music"
“The integrated amplifier is coming of age again, and in the H360 Hegel has created a new reference product in its range that looks to be creating a whole new benchmark performance for others to try their best to match” Chris Ward Hi-Fi Choice (UK) - September 2015

Technically - it is a term describing the difference between the output impedance of the amplifier and the load impedance of the loudspeaker.
Practically - It will determine the stability of the amplifier. It needs to stop the “return kick” of current from the loudspeaker or it will be knocked out of balance.
Eeeuhhmm? - Sonically, a higher damping factor means better bass control. Lower damping factor means fluffy bass.
Standard - The industry average is 60-80. Hegel is 1000-4000. That is what makes Hegel so tight and dynamic.

Completed loudspeaker cables are chilling out on Hegel's H30 power amplifier 8-)

We're often asked as to what speaker cables we use and sell. The picture shows main speaker cables we use/sell (which we recently terminated) and the process we prefer to go through to complete each pair of speaker cables (this service is free to those who are especially nice to us :D). A pair of speaker cables takes us around ninety minutes to terminate/complete with eight 4mm plugs. Next the speaker cables are then used with an amp and loudspeakers (on this occasion Hegel's H30 power amplifier and Monitor Audio's Gold 200 loudspeakers) for three hours. Next we put the speaker cables to one side for two days. After two days the speaker cables are used again with an amp and loudspeakers (on this occasion a Hegel H30 and ATC's curved SCM40 passive monitors) for fifteen minutes. Once we're satisfied the speaker cables are ready to be handed over to our clients :)

The speaker cables in the picture are being used by our clients with the following systems/components -

4m/pair - Hegel H80 amp/DAC & Monitor Audio Silver 6 loudspeakers

4m/pair - Naim SuperUniti & ATC curved SCM11 passive monitors

1.5m/pair - Hegel H360 amp/DAC & KEF R700 loudspeakers

Hi Rick,

That was a great price you were offering on the Z7, not surprised they were snapped up :) Is it on the way out? What is replacing it?

I've seen a few of your thoughts on other forums, but (expect when you go to high end Chord) do you rate Yamaha as the best AV amps to drive ATCs?

Just trying to gather my thoughts for some future plans... ;)

Thanks,
Ben

Hi Ben

Yes, i think it was a very fair price and yes the DSP-Z7 will be replaced although there is no news yet of the replacement model.

I've sold quite a few Yamaha AV amps and have also extensively used them with ATC monitors over the years. There have been and there are many good AV amps on the market however ultimately experience has shown me that when it comes to AV amps in particular Yamaha AV amps are the reference. Having said this and without wishing to contradict myself Yamaha AV amps can ultimately be improved upon however a signifcant sum of money needs to be spent.

All the best

Type B USB input. The USB input is adaptive rather than asynchronous, as Hegel has developed their own elaborate reclocking system that uses a buffer and a precise proprietary clock that they believe does a better job of rejecting jitter than do most USB receiver chips in asynchronous mode.

Thanks for that Rick, very helpful :D

I don't think you're contradicting yourself, as you say there's a significant price gap up to the and with that kind of gap you'd expect an improvement.

Out of interest, have you heard anything from either (1) Anthem (their very expensive AV components have been well reviewed, tho they look terrible compared to the Chord ;) and they were demonstrating a £1500 'trickle down' model at the Manchester show) or (2) Primare? Obviously I like the Primare sound and feel it works well with my speakers and the SP32 has a "modular design, which allows for entire DSP, video and control sections to be upgraded with proprietary Primare boards. This means that uniquely, the SP32 can offer protection against built-in obsolescence", which would be an attractive feature for someone like me not planning to make repeat 4 figure purchases on AV equipment.

http://www.primare.net/product.asp?ProductID=27

No worries if not heard either of these, I can't imagine there are too many around.

Thanks Rick,
Ben

Hi Ben

I've heard the Anthem and some time ago at a show Primare's AV products. On both occasions i have been highly impressed with the Anthem and Primare. I can see the appeal of the Primare with its modular construction particualrly if you don't fancy changing the components frequently. Primare AV electronics and ATC passive monitors would make an excellent multi channel system. :)

All the best

Hi Rick,

Interesting to hear that, thanks for your thoughts :D I suspect auditioning the primare stuff may be difficult but I do have a good idea of the synergy. These thoughts are still a long way off becoming reality so I imagine I'll have a proper chat with you when the time comes :) And the new yamaha stuff will be out by then so I'll get to find out what that's like.

I came across a number of yamaha amps for sale listed as 'coming soon'. Does this include the Z7 replacement or is it lower end stuff? I think the top price was around £1500.

Thanks,
Ben

You are right about the Anthem looking awful.... I've just bought one (D2v) and with the active ATC setup it sounds very very good indeed....

Hi Paul :)

Congratulations on the new purchase :) Glad it's sounding good - would be great to see some photos if you get any time to add to your (already excellent) system thread :)

Interestingly, I had a chat with the guy from anthem who disagreed that they weren't the best looking pieces of kit (I was trying to be polite) but then slightly contradicted himself by saying that their purchasers at that price point weren't really bothered with looks. I guess to an extent this is true, but I know I'd rather have both if possible :)
