Replacement for Vifa D27G-46-06

Postby Mariner » Thu Oct 31, 2019 5:36 pm

I want to replace my old tweeter in my SCM20.
The original Vifa D27G-46-06 is no longer available.
As far as i know i have the opportunity to take a

Vifa D27TG-35-06 or a
ScanSpeak Discovery D2606/9220

Which one should i use,
or in other words... had anybody some experiences with that,
or is able to recommend a solution.
I don´t want to make changes in the crossover if it´s possible !

Thanks for any idea!

Why do you want to replace? If it is getting dull sounding, you can have someone replace the ferrofluid. If there are other reasons I got nuthin ;)

Yes they are sounding more and more dull i think.
And they are a bit older so that it might be senseful to make a change.

Can you give me an advice how to replace the ferrofluid?

Send ATC an email about a suitable replacement.

That might be the right way, but I know that ATC takes it's time to answer email,
and I hope to get a quick solution here from the huge experiences that people have here!

Yes, I believe a phone call is the best way to contact ATC.

And here is my problem again...
For me, as a german, it is not so easy to make a phone call in english and discuss a technical problem. :?
So i wait for further posts of own experiences from ATC ownerns that may have the same problem in the past.

A speaker repair place would likely know how to do it and know how to get the fluid. The tough part is getting the old fluid out, but it is similar to cleaning the gap when you re-cone a woofer.

So i will try to find such a place in my region !
But if anybody here has changed his Vifa tweeter, maybe he can tell me what
kind of tweeter he had used for replacement.
Thanks !

I think Todd has the right answer. No matter what tweeter you change to, it will- for certain- be different. The speaker will not sound the same. It may not only be an issue of crossover point but also of sensitivity: old vs new will surely have different sensitivities. Even if 1/2 dB different in old vs new, that will massively change the character of the speaker (think of turning up or down the ENTIRE tweeter range 1/2 dB or more above the crossover point- that's a lot of change). This is exactly the issue that caused ATC to rethink tweeter upgrades in passives. The old OEM tweeters varied a lot more in sensitivity than anyone remembered. The new ATC tweeter was more sensitive and meant any upgrade would need new tweeters, new crossovers AND re calibration for levels. Way too much expense to do all that.

Replacing Ferro Fluid is the only thing that will preserve original calibration. And maybe hunt down some spare tweeters on ebay, the model you have now, so you have some spares you can replace the ferro fluid in.

Thanks for your post Brad!
My research for solutions have these results:
The Vifa D27G-46-06 is a "special " tweeter for ATC.
The label...-46-06 is because of the special ATC baseplate.
Without the plate it is a, still available, a Vifa27TG-35-06 .
Scanspeak had rebuild this Vifa speaker under the Name Discovery D2606/922000.
So all you have to do to make a 27TG-35-06 to a D27G-46-06
is to replace the original ATC baseplate to the new tweeter.
I have ordered a pair of Scanspeak and will see what happend.
A few years ago a member called Naimster had done exactly what i do now,
and seems to was happy with that solution.

I will inform you when i have replaced my old tweeters,
and have a result !
I will keep my old tweeters if a Ferrofluid restoration is necessary !

Thanks to all for your support !

The new tweeters are in my SCM20 now, and the first listening session happend yesterday evening.

At first.. the Scanspeak Discovery D2606/922000 fits perfect, so that the exchange had
last less than 15 min. ! All you need is a scewdriver, two fitting bits and a little patience.
No extra skills are needed !! No soldering is needed !
The original ATC baseplate fits perfect and the Scanspeak looks exactly like my old Vifa tweeter.

And what should i say to the sound.......
The SCM20 live again!!
All the felt losts in spatial resolution and airy sound are gone.
These are my old SCM20 again that i loved for more tha 20 years!
Might be that the change to the new ATC tweeter will be a progress,
but here the costs are very low (100€ for a pair of Scanspeak),
and there are no additional costs and risk of shipping.

At last i´m satisfied with this easy change with low costs,
and a reborn speaker, that i played in thought to sell.
I´m very happy that this did not happend!!

So if anybody had some old SCM10/20 etc. with the Vifa tweeter,
and has the feeling that the sound is getting to dull,
try the invest of 100€, and maybe you will be happy like me afterwards.
