centre channel with SCM7

Postby omer » Sat Apr 16, 2011 11:35 am

Hello,

I have SCM7's speaker and now I would buy an ATC centre channel.
unfortunaly I can't listen and buy ATC speakers in South of France (I bought my ATC in UK 3 years ago).
I have an hesitation between C1C (small and affordable price) and C3C (very higher price and heavy for shipping in France).
What is your advice?
thanks

The C1C uses the same mid bass driver as the 7s, the C3C the same as the 11s. All use the same tweeter. There are several forum members using both. Benny39 successfully uses the C1C with 40s as his front speakers, AlmaataKZ even uses it with active 50s as fronts. This is down to the tonal consistency you get with ATC :D

I would have thought, especially given the weight and expense, at the moment you're best with the C1C. However, if you plan to upgrade your 7s in the next few years, you might save yourself upgrade money in the long run by going for the C3C.

My c1c replaced a tiny Elac Cinema 2 speaker, so was a major upgrade. Multichannel was much less important for me than stereo so I wanted a very decent but inexpensive centre channel - which c1c exaclty is. It plays well with the rest the kit (it is driven by a mid-range Marantz sr5005 100wpc av receiver). Another reason for me not to go c3c was that it did not fit on my rack.

I would imagine that c3c would be a very little bit fuller in sound due to larger drivers/volume and therefore deeper bass responce. I think otherwise the sound will be very very similar between the two.

Note that even c1c is very heavy, unusualy heavy for it's size. I say, for the price - c1c is superb value.

Another advice - do not bothe matching the finish to the rest of your kit, go for hte cheapest (black?) finish - all you see is the front baffle anyway! which is black with any box finish.

you seem to be satisfied with your c1c, so it will be a coherent and reasonable choice for me.

Do you think that a Marantz MA-500 THX mono amp is sufficient for a c1c? or I need to use two in bi-amp?

At 125w that should be plenty :) You can always add a second later if you're not entirely satisfied.

Now, the most difficult for me is to find a shop that sell c1c at a good price and send in France.

and later, c3c/scm40... but now:
- avr: marantz sr5600 in first time after i don't know?
- br: pioneer bdp-51fd
- main: scm7/naim nap180
- centre: c1c/marantz ma-500
- surround: kef iq8ds/marantz ma-500
- sub: may be bk xxls400 ?

I can't find any C1C's for sale used at the moment, but they do come up on Ebay quite often.

Hi Guys
My 3C3 arrived this morning. I ordered it in black expecting to receive a black ash finish, but instead got a beautiful satin black finish. Looks terrific.
I have company from out of the country and it's crowded in our house right now, so hooking it up will have to wait a week or two. Still, looking forward to hearing my system more completely realized!
