Surround speakers?

Postby Topmetom » Sun Jan 08, 2012 10:26 am

Hello!

Just wondering what surround speakers people use( if any)?

I currently have some m&k columns they sit on the floor behind you pointing up and sideways. ATC as far as i know dont do a surround? What would be a good match?

The 7's is what I'm using at the moment & they're doing well & sound fine :)

Hi Topmetom

I started of by using SCM7 monitors for rear surrounds. I am currently using SCM19's for surrounds with SCM40's (fronts) and C3C (centre).

All the best

Hi Topmetom
I use Monitor Audio Radius HD range of fronts and surrounds in a 5.1 configuration. Gives really good results; the sub needs a thick plinth to sit on or it sounds a bit 'boomy'. Will be looking to add another couple of front wides to take to 7.1.
All in all they are a decent compromise on the bulky full size hi-fi units I used to have versus sound quality. I also didn't like having hi fi speakers for the rears-sounded too 'fat' (if you know what I mean?), they need to be subtle and dedicated surround speakers I find best, just my opinion of course.
cheers
Mark

If you are considering 7s and 19s then 11s would also be a possibility :)
HiFi: Sonos & Primare -> ATC SCM40

AV: Pioneer 428XD / Onkyo SC886 -> Primare A30.5 -> ATC SCM11s, ATC C3C, Q7000 LR, ATC C2 sub

These would also be worth considering. They use the same SL bass driver as the 19's

I am using SCM20SL passives for surround with a Bryston 4BST amp. I am more than happy with this configuration. You can check out my system setup on line here. ATC is actually the ONLY company I am aware of that makes speakers that are voiced the same across their entire offering. This makes them the ONLY speaker manufacturer that offers true studio quality surrounds of various size (to suit the room constraints). Everyone else is just pushing marketing BS. As far as I can tell, the only way to get a proper surround setup with other manufacturers is to use the same model speaker everywhere - like Genelec offers. (FWIW HIgh end Studios will do this even with ATC's!) I have not heard any other manufacturer produce consistent sounding products of various sizes over a long period of time. B&W make some absolutely awesome speakers but they have a lot of variation in sound across their offering and they constantly change models and sound coloration every few years.

I love my Anthem AVM20 DSP. It is way out of date (about ten years old) but I simply can't be bothered to change it. It has no video processor or HDMI input so it only gets optical DTS and/or Dolby Digital 5.1 out of my blu-ray player but the ATC's still make everything sound like the voice of God and the blu-ray 1080P simply goes straight to the projector. I rarely if ever watch DVD but if I did then I would probably want a decent video processor to upscale and the AVM20 would have to go... :)

Well to update!

Had a rather large bill last month so put the whole lot up for sale, got interest in the 35's and one in the centre but the offer was way to low! So they're all still here!!

I have been offered 500 for my columns and have found some 11's for the same price(500), just unsure if the swaps the right thing to do????

Hi Topmetom

Sorry to hear you've had to put your system on the market :cry:
What i would say though, is not to sell for peanuts as you will regret it. Try and look at other ways to raise the cash.

Swapping the M&K's for some scm11's will help towards a complete ATC setup, but will it mean you have to budget for stands too? Sounds like a good price on the 11's though.

Cheers

I sold my oppo blu ray player yesterday :(

But I have been ripping all my films onto my NAS, with no loss of quality, so that helped :D

Can't bring myself to sell them so took them off for sale!

Heres the 11's!!

Hi Topmetom

Will the stands come with the 11's?
Will you be able to go for a listen before you buy?

Cheers
