How much amp is needed ??

Postby Mariner » Thu Feb 23, 2017 10:51 pm

I´m still collecting parts for my surround system ! ;)

So, after i had all my speakers together i´m looking for the amps !
My aim is to buy an actual processor when i´m ready as a preamp.
Now my focus is only on amps.
From my old stereo i had a Mcintosh MC 2205 (200W /8Ohm each channel) that worked together with my SCM20 for years to my absolut satisfaction.
My question now is what amp is good for the rears (SCM10 MKI) and the front presence (SCM7 MKI) ?
The first look is on used Mcintosh amps.
I asked myself if a MC2105 (120W/8Ohm) is enough for the SCM10 ?
And a MC502 (75W/8Ohm ) for the SCM7?
These both are possible to buy at the moment, and ( which might be important) all from one series !

My first intension was/is a MC 7106 which had 6 channels (100W/8Ohm)
Here i like to bridge two channels (320W/8Ohm) for the SCM20,
the last two channels (100W/8Ohm) for the SCM7.
And the MC2205 (200W/8Ohm) for the SCM10.

But for this constellation i have to wait for a used MC7106 (or a MC 216) .
But time is not my problem !
I also will have to renovate the house the system will be in ! :D

So ..... what kind of constellation would you recommend ??
Open and thankful for any idea !!
My center and sub are active so they are out of focus !

I like the bolded plan!!

I reckon you can get away with a bit less juice for rears/front presence as your Pre/Pro's bass management will be steer the lower (sub 80hz) frequencies to your sub anyway.

Also............ should sound better with SEPARATE amps (2105 and 502) anyway as the PS of each will not be working as hard as that of a 6 channel amp (7106) partly in bridge mode having to run 2 sets of speakers.

Not a fan of bridging..........IME ........you can hear "strain" in the sound..........like an over revving engine.

Hi linger63,

thanks a lot for your opinion !!
Thats a new perspective.

I like that plan, because all of the amps are from the late 70ies/early 80ies and might have the same sound with different power.
So the system might be more "harmonic" in this constellation.
Aside that, they also look very similar which is also a bit "eye candy".

But... if anybody else will give his "50cent".. i have open ears ! ;)

I think you have your power priorities the wrong way round (IMHO)! The centre channel has the largest demand for output from every component of the system. As it is an SCM7 is going to struggle to keep up with SCM20s either side of it, even more so if you only put 75w of power behind it.

More power for the centre speaker, and less for the rears...

Thanks for your statement Alexk,

but as i wrote above, my center (C4CA) is active and therefore not in the dicussion.

In between i bought the MC502 for the FP, and the MC2125 for the rears.
The argument of amp bridging, and the need of less power for FP and rears
are convincingly. Aside that, i like that all amps are from one Mcintosh period and very similar in look.

Thanks !!
