BTW my Nikon 50mm 1.8G has arrived :D :D :D :D

Combination with my D7100 when it arrives i should see some good improvements espeically in low light light situations.

Also should improve the Tamron 70-300 VC lens.

Shadorne do you have any pics with the D800 that i can see so i can compare?

You cannot really compare on line as the photos are reduced but you can see the incredible resolution of the D800 here

I like the way the bird sneaked into the last picture :)

Cheers

What lens are you using on the D800?

Also are you using a polarizing filter?

I use a Nikkor 20mm F2.8 a lot for wide angle (the above shots are all taken with that), Nikkor 50mm F1.4G for normal shots or low light, Nikkor 85mm 1.8G for portrait, Nikkor 300mm F2.8 with TC-17E Teleconverter for birding (biggest lens I can carry comfortably around with me when hiking). No polarizing filters at all.

Yes! I did not choose the best or most artistic photos - just photos to show how the camera and lens perform - those who pixel peep or worry about corner sharpness or CA will be interested in those photos (for example you can see some purple fringes (CA) around the tree branches at the extreme edges of the photo and where you have bright sky behind - this is a limitation of the lens optics). That seagull is still fairly darn sharp given where it is on such a very wide angle lens.

The Nikkor 20mm F2.8D is a tiny lens - nice and portable - yet it still takes damn sharp shots. The best FX wide angle in a Nikkor lens is probably the 14-24mm F2.8G but it is too heavy as far as I am concerned. I wanted a wide angle I can carry in my pocket for the odd shot while I am out in nature with my birding lens or something that I can travel with easily. I was amazed at how good this old 20mm F2.8 lens is on a D800 (they have been making this lens or something just like it for about 30 years).

That picture certainly does a good job of demonstrating the camera and lens abilities :)

Here are a couple more of San Francisco showing low light and you can get a close to the subject with the same lens (the chain in the foreground)

You can see some CA on the sides of the second shot due to the bright sky behind the thin cables of the bridge - showing the limitations of this compact lens.

That's very impressive how well focused everything is in that image, even at hugely different distances from the camera :)

This is probably asking the impossible, but is there a compact camera out these days that does a fairly good job of aproaching what a DSLR does?
The main thing that annoys me about most digital point and shoot cameras I've used is the huge delay from pressing the shutter button to actually taking the picture.
