"We got plenty of sixties slums
They said she jumped from floor twenty one
It's empty now but it blocks out the sun
Used to be the shape of things to come
The children runnin'raggedy breaking the glass
Smashing the lights in the underpass
Gonna need no flag when they're seventeen
For waiting at someone who looks like the Queen"

Unsurprisingly, Nile - and Barry Gibb to a lesser extent - made everyone else I saw at G'Bury sound very ordinary. Jerry Barnes did a pretty good job filling in for Bernard too. Could have done with Kendrick, Earl, Frank or Chance in the line-up though to make it interesting:

This was used by David Lynch in the eighth episode of the new Twin Peaks. Many of the images were both beautiful and terrifying. Probably the most avant garde piece of television since ?:

Fabio Aru almost made me choke on my spaghetti vongole as he powered away on Le Tour today. Totally thrilling:

Rick Hall, who founded FAME studios in Muscle Shoals, died today. In tribute, here's one of his many fine productions:

This just edges "God" as my favourite track from Damn. I'm praying for you Kendrick.

To an old guy living in an environment very different from the one described here, this cuts through the usual rap braggadocio and delivers a potent message, soulfully:

Jazz and poetry often don't make great bedfellows. This album however, is wonderful:

His album was deservedly mentioned in many year-end R&B lists. Daniel sounds like a very laid back chap and this just hangs between the speakers drawing you into it's multi-layered bass heavy world:

Neil Brand - in his recent series on BBC4 on the evolution of the musical - pointed out that this was the first, and possibly the best, conditional love song in musical theatre. It certainly gets to me:

This comes from her mesmerizing album of 1976, which was re-issued last year. File alongside Sandy Denny:

This is so seductive and gorgeous that I can even forgive the Kenny G. like horn:
